The 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit: What They Are and How They Work
What are the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit? Where do they come from? And how do they differ from other spiritual gifts in the Bible?
These seven gifts—wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord—come from the prophet Isaiah's description of the Messiah. They represent the fullness of the Spirit's work in transforming believers from the inside out.
This guide explores each of the seven gifts, what they mean, and how they operate in the life of a believer.
Where Do the 7 Gifts Come From?
The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit come from Isaiah 11:2-3:
"The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,
the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
and he will delight in the fear of the Lord."
Isaiah was describing the coming Messiah—Jesus Christ. The Spirit would rest on Him in fullness, equipping Him for His ministry. But through Christ, believers also receive the Spirit and these same gifts.
The 7 Gifts vs. Other Spiritual Gifts
The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are different from the spiritual gifts listed in Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12:
| 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit | Spiritual Gifts (1 Cor 12, Rom 12) |
|---|---|
| Given to all believers | Distributed differently to each |
| Transform character | Equip for service |
| Isaiah 11:2-3 | Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4 |
| Sanctifying gifts | Ministry gifts |
| Make us more like Christ | Build up the church |
Both are from the Holy Spirit. Both are important. But they serve different purposes.
The seven gifts perfect our relationship with God. The spiritual gifts (like teaching, prophecy, and serving) equip us to serve others. They work together—character and calling, being and doing.
